More than a Building: Ashgrove’s New Community Space Brings Neighbors Together

It started with laughter, shared stories, and the simple joy of being together.
For years, the Ashgrove community space has been a place where neighbours came to connect — whether it was kids gathering for after school programs, local organizations supporting residents, or neighbours celebrating life’s milestones. This spirit of connection has always been strong.
Ashgrove is home to nearly 500 Ottawa Community Housing tenants, and the original community room has always been a trusted gathering spot. But over time, it became clear that the space needed to be larger, more accessible, and more functional to meet the neighbourhood’s growing needs.
With the help of feedback from the community, Ashgrove’s community space has been updated to better meet today’s needs and help more people feel connected.
What’s new?
The original community room has been transformed and now includes:
- Two new accessible washrooms that are easy for everyone to use, including people who use wheelchairs or walkers
- A dedicated storage room, so supplies and equipment can stay on site, making event planning easier.
Brand-New Standalone Community Centre:
Right next to the original space is a brand-new field house!
- It’s a bigger, open space where tenants can enjoy after-school programs, tenant meetings, celebrations, and workshops.
- It includes a kitchenette with a fridge to help with snacks and simple meals during events.
Thanks to the voices and ideas of the community, Ashgrove now has a welcoming, accessible space that meets the needs of today and inspires a stronger, more connected neighbourhood for years to come.
